How to keep your WhatsApp updated and why it is important

Keeping our WhatsApp updated is perhaps more important. Otherwise how on earth are we supposed to receive those features and updates that folks at WhatsApp have been consistently rolling out for the greater good?

Keeping our WhatsApp updated is perhaps more important than the anti-misinformation feature itself. Otherwise how on earth are we supposed to receive those features and updates that folks at WhatsApp have been consistently rolling out for the greater good?

WhatsApp, being one of the most popular instant messaging apps worldwide, has a massive user base. And it keeps rolling out routine updates and features to keep security and privacy concerns at bay.

No matter how good and essential WhatsApp is, WhatsApp has also become a home for rumour-mongers due to illiteracy and the lack of technical understanding.

For preventing rumours and fake news forwards to some extent, WhatsApp recently rolled out a new update that restricts the number of times one can forward a particular message.

As a result, you can’t forward the same message to more than five users or groups. Before you wonder whether this move would be of any help, I would like to drive your attention to another, more serious question – How many people update WhatsApp in the first place?

Keeping our WhatsApp updated is perhaps more important than the anti-misinformation feature itself. Otherwise how on earth are we supposed to receive those features and updates that folks at WhatsApp have been consistently rolling out for the greater good?

According to a recent BuzzFeed article How WhatsApp Destroyed A Village, many users in rural areas don’t even have a Google account, let alone updates delivered through Play Store.

All credit goes to file-sharing apps like ShareIt that allows people to sideload WhatsApp.

Meaning, the majority of people in rural areas can’t benefit from this anti-misinformation feature recently rolled out by WhatsApp due to the tendency of not keeping WhatsApp up-to-date.

Tips to keep your WhatsApp up-to-date

Below are some of the basic but useful tips to keep your WhatsApp up-to-date:

Turn on Auto-update apps

Do remember that enabling auto updates option will apply to all the apps installed on your smartphone, including WhatsApp.

If you enable automatic app updates, you will no longer have to worry about updating your apps manually. Because more often than not, we tend to forget when it comes ensuring our security and privacy online.

Updating apps not only delivers new features but also fixes bugs and security loopholes that may be harmful. Go to Play Store > Tap the hamburger menu at the top left corner > Settings > Auto-update apps.

If you select the option to auto-update apps over any network (including your cellular data), you might have to bear additional data charges. Similarly, you can also choose to auto-update apps over Wi-Fi.

Do remember that enabling this option will apply to all the apps installed on your smartphone, including WhatsApp.

Download WhatsApp from the official website

This tip should be helpful for people in rural areas who don’t have a Google account. They can go to https://www.whatsapp.com/download/ and download the latest, updated version of WhatsApp.
